Purpose
Nexutecture is a proposition to be tested, not a vocabulary to be protected from evidence. This agenda identifies the questions, methods, and evidence needed to determine where the framework is useful, where it fails, and how it should evolve.
Primary research question
Under what conditions does designing relationships, agency, feedback, stewardship, and repair improve the capacity of living systems to flourish and adapt without transferring harm across people, places, or generations?
Research domains
1. Foundations and theory
- Which intellectual and practice traditions anticipate Nexutecture?
- What does the framework add beyond systems thinking, architecture, cybernetics, ecology, participatory design, transition design, and commons governance?
- Where does living-systems language illuminate social reality, and where might it naturalize power or injustice?
- Can the seven-layer living nexus be operationalized without becoming reductive?
Early output: an annotated intellectual lineage and a paper defining the framework’s distinct contribution.
2. Community intelligence
- Which structures help communities detect weak signals and combine different forms of knowledge?
- How do decision methods affect legitimacy, speed, inclusion, and learning?
- What forms of memory preserve dissent and context without creating unusable archives?
- When does participation build agency, and when does it extract time or legitimize predetermined outcomes?
- How can community intelligence be evaluated without rewarding only easily counted activity?
Early output: a comparative study of community decision-and-learning systems.
3. Adaptive design and governance
- Which combinations of modularity, reversibility, subsidiarity, and feedback increase adaptive capacity?
- What constitutional commitments must remain stable while other system elements change?
- How should authority shift during emergencies and return afterward?
- What makes repair pathways trusted and effective?
- When is centralization necessary, and what mechanisms prevent it from becoming permanent?
Early output: a tested adaptive living system design brief and governance pattern library.
4. Place, ecology, and material systems
- How can more-than-human interests and future generations be represented in present decisions?
- Which material-flow indicators meaningfully connect neighborhood action to bioregional limits?
- What distinguishes demonstrable regeneration from reduced harm or regenerative branding?
- How do local adaptation strategies displace risk beyond their boundaries?
Early output: a place-based ecological accounting and representation protocol.
5. Technology, data, and AI
- Which digital tools genuinely distribute capability rather than dependency?
- What governance models protect personal data, community knowledge, and cultural sovereignty?
- Where can AI support translation, synthesis, simulation, and memory?
- Which uses of AI improperly substitute prediction for deliberation or automation for legitimacy?
- How can communities audit AI-supported decisions with limited technical resources?
Early output: a constitutional AI assessment for community and civic systems.
6. Economy and stewardship
- Which ownership and funding arrangements support long-term maintenance and shared value?
- How can social, ecological, cultural, and knowledge value inform decisions without being collapsed into one score?
- What economic signals reveal extraction from community capacity?
- Which procurement and finance mechanisms support iteration, repair, and local capability?
Early output: a comparative analysis of stewardship-oriented economic models.
7. Education and professional practice
- What capabilities do Nexutecture practitioners need?
- How should roles, ethics, curricula, and professional accountability change?
- Can interdisciplinary teams develop shared practice without erasing specialized knowledge?
- What institutional incentives prevent professionals from designing for long-term learning and stewardship?
Early output: a competency framework and pilot curriculum.
8. Outcomes and evaluation
- What indicates that a living nexus is becoming more capable, legitimate, regenerative, and resilient?
- How should benefits, burdens, risks, and agency be measured across time and scale?
- What unintended consequences follow from Nexutecture interventions?
- What counterfactual or comparative methods are credible in complex place-based systems?
Early output: a mixed-method evaluation framework with an explicit limits statement.
Research principles
Research conducted under Nexutecture should be:
- constitutional: protecting rights, dignity, consent, and routes for redress;
- participatory: involving affected communities in questions, methods, interpretation, and benefit;
- place-based: attentive to history, ecology, culture, and power;
- plural: combining quantitative, qualitative, historical, spatial, and lived evidence;
- longitudinal: observing adaptation, maintenance, and indirect effects over time;
- comparative: testing alternatives and boundary conditions rather than collecting only success stories;
- reflexive: recording the researcher’s role, interests, assumptions, and effects;
- open where responsible: sharing methods, tools, findings, and negative results while protecting sensitive knowledge; and
- actionable: connecting learning to decision, repair, and redesign.
Evidence architecture
Each study should document:
- question and hypothesis;
- relevant canonical claims;
- place, history, participants, and boundary;
- power and interest analysis;
- methods and ethical safeguards;
- evidence provenance and limitations;
- findings, uncertainty, and dissenting interpretations;
- practical implications;
- harms, repairs, and unexpected effects; and
- proposed canonical changes, if any.
Initial research program
Phase 1 — Grounding
- build the intellectual lineage;
- assemble a diverse case library, including failures;
- interview practitioners and community stewards;
- refine definitions and falsifiable claims; and
- establish community research governance.
Phase 2 — Instruments
- pilot the living nexus map;
- pilot the community intelligence diagnostic;
- test the adaptive design brief;
- develop measures of agency, learning, stewardship, and repair; and
- publish reusable protocols.
Phase 3 — Field laboratories
Partner with several different communities on bounded, community-governed interventions. Use comparative and longitudinal methods. Do not describe communities as laboratories unless they choose that framing and hold meaningful governance power.
Phase 4 — Synthesis
Compare cases, identify boundary conditions, revise the canonical framework, publish negative and mixed results, and establish the next research cycle.
Priority case types
- adaptive housing and neighborhood infrastructure;
- community energy, food, water, or mobility systems;
- schools and public institutions as learning systems;
- community-owned digital or data infrastructure;
- climate adaptation across jurisdictional boundaries;
- Indigenous and traditional stewardship, only through sovereign and reciprocal partnerships; and
- initiatives that ended, failed, or caused harm.
Canonical feedback
Research should change the canonical set only when evidence and deliberation justify it. Proposed revisions should state whether they:
- clarify language;
- alter a principle;
- add a boundary condition;
- retire a failed claim;
- introduce a validated pattern; or
- identify an unresolved contradiction.
The health of Nexutecture will be measured partly by its willingness to record limits, revise claims, and learn from people who challenge it.
